2003 LOVELL AAA Wins Walpole Winter Classic
The Lovell Knights outlast the Crimson hockey club with a 2-1 victory in the final game to take home the Championship of the Walpole Express Winter Classic tournament which took place at Rodman Arena on the Christmas weekend. Coming off the Christmas Holiday the Knights were facing 7 games in a three day period in which they went 5-2. After the three round robin games the Knights grabbed the # 1 seed and played the express team in the semifinals with a convincing win 8-1. The Crimson enter the final on a dramatic shootout victory over the other Express team to advance to the finals. Having some great momentum and looking to avenge an early 5-0 loss to the Knights the final was set.
Per tournament rules the final was only a 30 minute game and the first 15 minutes was scoreless, Around the 13 minute mark the Knights jumped on the scoreboard first with a scramble out in front of the net and a tap in by the Knights. The lead was a short one as 2 minutes later the Crimson also tap one in with a scramble out front of the net. As the teams went up and down the ice u could see playing the third game of the day both teams were giving it there all and with 3 minutes to go a shot from the Knights defense and a good job of screening the goalie by forwards created the go ahead goal. The Crimson did not die and fought hard to the end but the Knights held on to preserve the tourney Championship.
The Knights will look to keep the winning streak alive as they return to league games to start the new year and will be in search of some points to try and get in the playoff picture in league play.
